Letterbox: Overlook Hotel
Special: Almost goes without saying that Ulysses S. Grant viewed this
letterbox site on July 30, 1873 at about 7pm as he arrived to this
majestic hotel on top of this mountain.
Location: Overlook Mountain - Ulster County , NY
Northeast Catskill Trails - Map #41 (05 grid)
Nearest Town: Woodstock
Letterbox hidden on 8-11-02 at 9:30am by J&G and our dog "BUD"
Stamp Design: Owl
Distance to letterbox: 1.9 miles or about 51 telephone poles - if you
are counting. Normally takes 45 minutes to climb at a steady pace.
Terrain Difficulty: Easy - Popular hiked trail - shale/dirt road all
the way to hotel.
On weekends, volunteers ((sometimes)) sell water 1/2 mile further at the
top by the fire tower.
Directions/Clues:
1) This hike starts at the top of Mead's Mountain Road near the Zen
Monastery.
2) State trail parking lot has a sign in book at the start.
3) Hike to the hotel and go inside. (This place has been rebuilt many
times over and remains unfinished because of the 1928 stock market
crash!)
4) This picture is the main clue as to where the letterbox is hidden!
